Grove Collection SALE

Area 51 now has all Grove Collection at 50% off, while supplies last! Airy in appearance and solid in construction, the Grove collection adds a sense of the natural world to a room. The flat tops and seats in this collection are made from recycled elm wood, a dense wood with a rustic, burnt finish. Each piece is unique, made by artisans who carefully select roots and trunks of trees for their ornamental and functional strength. Pictured is the settee and long dining table with chairs. Come in to our showroom to view the entire collection, which includes a bench, stools, full length mirror, bookcase and coat rack.

A modern teapot

Area 51 is constantly looking for elegantly designed everyday objects, so we are thrilled to feature Joey Roth's Sorapot in our showroom. It embodies everything we look for in our products: it was designed to be used daily, last a lifetime, and provide pleasure with every use. It departs from traditional teapot design, with an architectural shape made from stainless steel, borosilicate glass (Pyrex), and food-grade silicone. From the designer: "My dream is to see a well-used and well-loved Sorapot in an antique shop in a few decades. The raw stainless steel will record the user's daily tea making, becoming shinier where it's held, revealing where it was scrubbed, and changing color gradually as tea tannins are deposited on its surface. It will look far better than when it comes out of the box new."

As an added bonus, the packing is designed to be sustainable (and beautiful). It's made with post-consumer recycled cardboard and molded pulp (like an egg crate), eliminating superfluous packing, and is tied with a natural jute rope. Visit http://www.sorapot.com/ to learn more about Joey Roth and his design, and come in to our showroom to admire it in person.

Piper Hopkins at Area 51

On May 10, Area 51 held the opening reception for Piper Hopkins: New Work. On display through the month of June are 33 new works. From piperhopkins.com:
Piper Hopkins: New Work explores the nuances of emotion and nostalgia through frenetic line work, jarring static forms and scale. By creating visual juxtapositions of loose figural forms placed on highly reflective metallic and silver-leafed backgrounds, Hopkins delves into how memories and feelings of nostalgia are interwoven, contained, or obfuscated by time.
Please come visit the showroom to see more of the work, it truly elevates the showroom into something extraordinary.

Ion Chairs by Gideon Kramer
We have a set of six Ion chairs designed by Seattle's own Gideon Kramer. The Ion chair was originally designed for the the Space Needle restaurant at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair.
These chairs are a fine example of mid-century modern design. They have a white lacquered fiberglass shell on chrome base and have been stress-tested to neither crack nor chip for 100 years. Each of the six chairs are signed by Gideon Kramer, making this rare set truly one of a kind.
