Area 51 is committed to helping the environment and making your home a healthy one. As part of these efforts, we have collaborated with local woodworkers to create the Area 51 Sustainable Collection. All pieces in the Sustainable Collection are made from reclaimed materials and finished with an all natural oil finish.
What makes this collection "sustainable"?-We use salvaged materials. All of our wood has either been reclaimed from a prior use (such as an old wooden boat) or it has been rejected from it's intended use due to minor imperfections. In either case the wood is usually burned or thrown in a landfill. By using salvaged wood we not only save the trees, but also we save all the energy that goes into cutting, milling, and transporting the lumber.
-We use a safe, natural finish. Typical furniture finishes are very unhealthy. They contain solvents that release harmful V.O.C.'s (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the air. We use a plant-based oil finish made by Biosheild, which does not off-gas any toxic fumes. Since it is an oil rather than a lacquer finish, touch-ups and repairs to the finish are easy; eliminating the need for a complete refinish.
-It is made locally. One of the biggest issues with outsourcing overseas is that the current methods of shipping are extremely detrimental to our environment. The large ocean freighters that carry our products across the globe consume hundreds of gallons of crude diesel to go just a few miles. By making our furniture locally we eliminate the use of large trucks and ocean freighters, dramatically reducing energy usage and cost to our environment. Additionally, we at Area 51 strive to support local small business whenever possible. By working with local woodworkers, we are able to do a small part in helping our local economy.

Please stop by to take a look at our Area 51 Sustainable Collection. We are very excited about it and would love to hear your feedback. Help us do our small part to change this industry and our earth for the better.
